Press release

To mark the first „International Holocaust Remembrance Day“, the Secretary General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan, will meet a delegation from the International Auschwitz Committee, including Auschwitz survivors from Poland, Germany and France.
Also included are young people from different countries who take part in the work of Holocaust-memorials and the International Youth Meeting Centre in Oswiecim/Auschwitz: Apprentices from Volkswagen Coaching who –together with young Poles- have acted as curators at the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum and young people from France and Belarus who are interested in educational work about the Holocaust.

Noach Flug, President of the IAC said: “The 27th of January is recognized as a day of remembrance world wide after the decision of the United Nations. But this day asks us to take a look into our world of today as well. If you do mention Auschwitz, you cannot remain silent about Rwanda, Srebrenica and Darfur. This is why the decision of the UN and our meeting with the Secretary General are particularly important for Auschwitz survivors: A decision of hope, a meeting of hope. ”

The Secretary General said: “I am very glad to be sharing the occasion with the
International Auschwitz Committee, which does so much work to keep the memory of the Holocaust alive, in so many imaginative ways.”
