20 March 2006:

Response of the IAC to the Sierra project in Pulheim

A project by the Spanish artist Santiago Sierra in Pulheim near Cologne has raised protest and indignation throughout Germany and above. On 12 March 2006 Sierra had connected the exhaust pipes of several cars by hosepipes and directed the poisonous waste gas into a former synagogue. Then the public was invited to enter the synagogue with gasmasks.
With his action named “245 cubic meters” and planned to take place every week, until 30 April, Sierra wants to point to the problem of trivialization of the holocaust, he said in a statement.
Sierra had been engaged by the cultural department of the municipal administration of Pulheim to carry out an art project in the former synagogue.
