Press Release
More than 1.4 million people visited the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial Centre in 2011
In comparison with 2010, this marks another slight rise. The largest proportion of visitors came from Poland, followed by Great Britain, Italy and Israel. Germany ranks fifth in the visitor statistics, with a slight drop to 58,000 visitors in 2011. Germany is followed by France and the USA.
"Auschwitz is a place of memories and remembrance, but it is also a place that can provide detailed insights, particularly to young people, showing where anti-Semitic hatred, images of the enemy and the right-wing scene's urge to annihilate can lead. This is why the survivors of Auschwitz see the most important message of the statistics in the fact that 74% of the visitors from around the world are young people under the age of 26," emphasised Christoph Heubner, Vice President of the International Auschwitz Committee in Berlin.
