The survivors of the German concentration and extermination camps are following the first steps taken by the new government in Germany with great interest. Commenting in Berlin Christoph Heubner, the der Executive Vice President of the International Auschwitz Committee said:

"The times are looking very fragile to survivors of Auschwitz. The anti-Semitism that is flaring up throughout Europe and the steadily increasing far-right conspiracy theories in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic are a source of great concern. For this reason they are grateful for the first statements of the Federal Minister of the Interior pledging to combat right-wing extremism more robustly. But they are also expecting the new federal government and the democratic parties in the German Bundestag to take a clear stand against right-wing extremist groups and parties within and outside the parliaments. It would be disastrous and incomprehensible to hand over the chair of the interior committee to the AfD which is participating in anti-democratic hate campaigns throughout the country and has long since become interwoven with right-wing extremists.

Such a handover would send out a fatally thoughtless signal to all the citizens who feel genuinely dedicated to democracy and stand up for it in their everyday lives.”
