Commenting in Berlin on the current behaviour of the AfD in the context of the Covid-19 crisis, Christoph Heubner, the Executive Vice President of the International Auschwitz Committee said:

“In the run-up to today’s debate on The Protection against Infection Act (IfSG) in the German Bundestag, the parliamentary leader of the AfD, Baumann, has again insidiously attempted to draw parallels between the planned legislation and the Nazi Enabling Act. Survivors of the Holocaust are appalled at this renewed poisoning of the political atmosphere in Germany and the ridiculing of all victims of National Socialism who were forced to suffer under the consequences of the Enabling Act and the destruction of democracy in Germany. The AfD’s inflammatory attitude, its repeated efforts to exploit people’s uncertainty, and to wilfully expose democracy and the parliament to attack, is cheap and disgraceful. But it is also becoming increasingly clear that the AfD is pursuing a definite goal with this cunning strategy both within and outside parliament, to permanently undermine and destabilize the legitimacy of democracy and its institutions.”
