Holocaust survivors in the International Auschwitz Committee are welcoming today’s gestures of solidarity towards Jewish people which will take place as Kippa demonstrations in many cities and regions throughout the country.

Commenting on the events, Christoph Heubner, Executive Vice President of the International Auschwitz Committee said:

"For Auschwitz survivors, today is an important day in a time filled with worry about their families in Germany and in Europe. They thank everyone who joins in these demonstrations for the clarity expressed by their stance, and the encouragement conveyed by their active participation. In German cities especially, Jewish people should be able to live in safety and free from anti-Semitic attacks. Nevertheless, we must all be aware that after the demonstrations the active and subtle everyday hatred will return: the slogan is then baseball cap instead of kippa, in an effort to avoid conflicts, ignorant comments and physical attacks. That’s why we all need to be aware that these demonstrations only mark the beginning. It is essential that politics, education, in fact we all discard taboos and succeed in recognising and naming the different threads of right-wing extremist and Islamist anti-Semitism that are currently developing into a threateningly dangerous concoction. If we can succeed in this – beyond all emotions – then today will have been an important first step, and even a turning point."
