It is with heavy hearts and deepest gratitude that Auschwitz survivors around the world are bidding farewell to the French-Jewish Auschwitz survivor Marceline Loridan-Ivens who, together with her father, was deported to Auschwitz in 1943 as Marceline Rosenfeld, age 15. She also survived the death march to Bergen-Belsen in January 1945. In May 1945, at the age of 17, she was liberated from the death camp of Theresienstadt Ghetto. After her return to France she began her career in filmmaking, especially as an assistant to documentary film makers. She later married the film director Joris Ivens.

In his tribute, Christoph Heubner, the Executive Vice president of the International Auschwitz Committee said during a stay at the Auschwitz Memorial:

"Marceline Loridan-Ivens was deeply inspired by her desire to depict the world of human beings with all of their fragmentations, vulnerabilities and beauties, and to transport these images into the hearts and minds of the viewers. In 2002 she faced up to the challenge of tracing her own history. She made the film Birkenau und Rosenfeld on the grounds of Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp telling of her youth in this place of horror and ashes. This film remains as her bequest countering anti-Semitic hatred and as her contribution to a world in which remembrance will never be extinguished."
