Outbreaks of anti-Semitism: ‘All too self-assured about having overcome its past’
Holocaust survivors see the renewed outbreaks of anti-Semitic hatred in Germany as a historical caesura.
In Berlin Christoph Heubner, Executive Vice President of the International Auschwitz Committee said:
"What is happening now is, above all, a colossal challenge to German society. The video filmed in Berlin of anti-Semitic hatred towards Jewish people illustrates the revolting and murderous trail of Nazi ideology that has clearly long-since become acceptable in sections of German society and is manifesting itself in hatred towards Jews and the state of Israel. In addition to this survivors find the fact that their relatives who were murdered in the gas chambers of Auschwitz are being derided and abused, is an almost unbearable disgrace that they never expected to see again in this form in Germany. As a result they are following the discussion surrounding these developments in a country that has apparently become all too self-assured about having overcome its past."
