Time and again the Russian president Vladimir Putin uses the terms “genocide” and “denazification” in his arguments for the invasion of Ukraine. In this context Christoph Heubner, Executive Vice President of the International Auschwitz Committee stated in Berlin:

"Across the world, Holocaust survivors and former prisoners of the German concentration and extermination camps are reacting to the news of Putin’s invasion of Ukraine with horror and intense pain. They would never have imagined that, after the experiences of Auschwitz and the sufferings of World War II, a Russian statesman would plunge Europe back into the darkness of war. They can hardly conceive the amount of pain and suffering that Putin and his accomplices are unleashing, not only on the people in Ukraine but also on Russian families.

The survivors of the Holocaust are particularly horrified by the fact that Vladimir Putin is repeatedly using the terms “genocide” and “denazification” in his rhetoric. The survivors see through Putin’s insidious talk as a cynical and deceitful lie that abuses not only the Holocaust survivors, but also all of the people who suffered in German concentration camps as Soviet prisoners of war, or who liberated Auschwitz and other concentration camps as members of the Red Army.”
