In honour of her 100th birthday the Auschwitz Committee presents the commemorative medal marking the 75th Anniversary of the Liberation of Auschwitz to Albina Moimas.

It is with deep gratitude and recognition that the thoughts of Auschwitz survivors throughout the world are now with Albina Moimas in Kassel. Their comrade-in-arms, friend and fellow sufferer celebrated her 100th birthday on 30 October.

After their horrific and painful experiences as young people in Auschwitz, this birthday is a very special present. Speaking in Berlin, Christoph Heubner, the Executive Vice President of the International Auschwitz Committee said:

"Albina Moimas came from a communist family of farmers and joined the Italian resistance against Italian and German fascism which had overrun almost the whole of Europe and buried it beneath its murderous ideology and anti-Semitic hatred. It is thanks to young people like Albina Moimas who, despite their fear and desperation in those dark years, managed to preserve the soul of Europe and fought for the freedom of its citizens.

When Albina Moimas was deported to Auschwitz in 1944 she was 22 years old. She survived the horrors, and over the years she has repeatedly given accounts about her life. And so, by recounting her memories, she gave her voice to those people who did not survive Auschwitz. Her accounts, which she told without bitterness and full of confidence, have motivated especially young people to stand up against right-wing extremist hatred. For this, the Auschwitz survivors are very grateful to their friend Albina Moimas. And so, it gives me great pleasure to award this medal commemorating the 75th Anniversary of the Liberation of Auschwitz to her on her 100th birthday."
