At long last a major change has been achieved in the Auschwitz trial in Neubrandenburg where the presiding judge Klaus Kabisch and two other judges in the chamber concerned have been given a red card for prejudice. For Auschwitz survivors, this comes as an extremely belated and bitter recognition on the part of the German judiciary.

During a stay at the Auschwitz Memorial, Christoph Heubner, the Executive Vice President of the International Auschwitz Committee stressed:

"From the very beginning of the proceedings, the presiding judge’s aggressive attitude and overt lack of interest towards the fate of the survivors and their memories were very obvious, and distressing and painful for the former prisoners of Auschwitz and their descendants. The sluggish progress of the court proceedings has left an appalling shambles which will go down in history as yet another negative example of failed attempts to adequately come to terms with the crimes of National Socialism. Nevertheless, the survivors are grateful that substitute judges in 60th Grand Criminal Chamber of Neubrandenburg have restored the dignity of the courts and have reprimanded their colleagues."
