On the death of Shimon Peres, Christoph Heubner, the Executive Vice President of the International Auschwitz Committee, said in Berlin:

"Auschwitz survivors throughout the world are mourning Shimon Peres, their brother, fellow traveller and friend, who has enriched the world for many years with his wisdom, his powers of recollection and his hope.

Shimon Peres shared the profound and lifelong pain of both the loss and the memories of the Holocaust: his unique greatness as a politician and as a human being grew out of the pain of the Holocaust and the consciousness of the survivor. Time and again he combined his realistic view of the horrors in the history of humankind with his work for a more peaceful world and the future of the state of Israel. We are remembering Shimon Peres with the words he spoke in his great speech before the German Bundestag on 27 January 2010 marking the Liberation of Auschwitz: ‘The Holocaust must not become a barrier against faith in decency, in hope and in life.’

Shimon Peres deplored hatred. Despite all of the harrowing struggles in his life he always remained the one who hoped, and the one who sought: a realist who believed in goodness. The world has grown darker with the departure of Shimon Peres."
