The International Auschwitz Committee is especially pleased with this year’s award of the Nobel Prize in Literature to the British writer Kazuo Ishiguro.

In Berlin the committee’s Executive Vice President, Christoph Heubner, said:

"The question of personal guilt in the face of breakdowns in society, remaining responsibility and remembrance as a driving force in human coexistence has always played a central role in Kazuo Ishiguro’s works. Many years ago Kazuo Ishiguro visited the memorials of Auschwitz and Birkenau at the invitation of the International Auschwitz Committee. The recollections of the survivors and the impressions in Birkenau moved him deeply and gave rise to many personal questions which he asked and publicly discussed as a member of the post-war generation. Through his books Kazuo Ishiguro has contributed greatly to a remembrance process that touches people throughout the world and sends them on a journey to themselves."
