Responding in Berlin to the American president’s election campaign team employing a Nazi symbol, the red inverted triangle marking political prisoners in concentration camps, and the subsequent removal of the adverts by Facebook, Christoph Heubner, the Executive Vice President of the International Auschwitz Committee stated:

“Survivors of the German concentration camps have very clear and painful memories of their labelling in the camps. The political prisoners were forced to wear the inverted red triangle on their clothing, and they were constantly exposed to the murderous hatred, arbitrary torment and torture of the SS guards in the camps. The fact that this emblem triggering brutal memories from the world of the concentration camps is being wilfully misused by Donald Trump’s campaign team in the run-up to the American presidential elections in order to sow hatred and stigmatize demonstrators, is an insult and a source of outrage to the former prisoners of the concentration and extermination camps operated by Nazi Germany. The removal of these contents by Facebook is consistent, and leaves room for hope that Marc Zuckerberg is finally beginning to comprehend the extent to which Facebook is being partially exploited for propagandistic and perfidious ends. The methods being used by the American president’s propagandists are despicable and lacking in the slightest sense of history.”
