Myanmar / Rohingya: ethnic cleansing

IAC logo

Auschwitz survivors throughout the world are horrified and deeply saddened by the images that are reaching them from Myanmar, and by the actions of ethnic cleansing that are leading to the persecution and humiliation of the Rohingya people, to their murder and expulsion before the eyes of the entire world. The Auschwitz survivors are grateful that the United Nations are now clearly defining what is happening in Myanmar: this is ethnic cleansing which, without an international outcry, will lead to more mass murders.

In this context Christoph Heubner, the IAC’s Executive Vice President stressed in Berlin: "For the survivors of Auschwitz, these images of hounded and fleeing women and children, together with the burning houses, suddenly make a dark wall of sinister memories rise up before their eyes. They are appalled that crimes such as those that are now being committed against the Rohingya people, are still happening in today’s world, and that they are still able to be perpetrated time and again. The survivors support and encourage the United Nations in their fight against a world of hatred and against the murderous hounding of minorities who are still being pursued in actions that are diametrically opposed to the hopes the survivors have always associated with a world after Auschwitz. Again, in this context, they are especially saddened by the silence of a woman who is a Nobel Peace Prize laureate."
