Dear Madam, Dear Sir,

We, representatives of the International Committee Buchenwald, Dora and Kommandos ICBD, hereby inform you of our statement concerning the invasion of Ukraine.

We thank you for the attention you will give to this statement and we invite you to give it the widest possible diffusion.

Very respectfully

Eva Pusztay, Naftali Fürst, Vasile Nuzsbaum, survivors of the nazi camps, members of the ICBD, together with their camp inmates,

The Executive Bureau and other delegations of the ICBD

International Committee Buchenwald - Dora and Kommandos

On behalf of the survivors of the Nazi concentration camps Buchenwald, Dora and their satellite camps, who experienced the invasion of their country by Nazi troops and its catastrophic consequences for themselves and their families,

In memory of the suffering of innocent civilians and resistance fighters, victims during World War 2 and victims of Nazi expansionist policies,

In memory of the genocide perpetrated by the Nazis against the Jews and Sinti and Roma of Europe, which led to the death of millions of people,

In the name of the 21,000 survivors of Buchenwald concentration camp who took an oath in the liberated Buchenwald camp on 19 April 1945,

The International Committee Buchenwald Dora and Commandos (ICBD) accuses Russian President Vladimir Putin of deliberate warmongering, systematic preparation for war and, finally, of the ruthless invasion of sovereign Ukraine by Russian troops in total disregard of existing treaties of international law and calling into question the established European post-war order.

The ICBD and its survivors recall the deep suffering of the large number of Soviet prisoners, among whom most were Russians and Ukrainians. They were captured by the fascists, deported and murdered in their thousands. All of them had the hope of becoming the witnesses and actors of a new, more peaceful world. None of them wanted war again, neither in their own lifetime, nor in that of their children.

ICBD strongly condemns the unjustified invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federal Republic and reminds it that, as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, it has a special responsibility for peace and security in the world.

With this statement, the ICBD supports the Ukrainian people and assures them of its solidarity in the struggle for freedom, democracy and state sovereignty.  It also declares its solidarity with all people who have been displaced from their homelands as a result of armed conflicts and who have to live in the greatest existential hardship. It sees with great concern that military expenditure is growing considerably in all states of the world and therefore demands that military budgets be cut and serious steps taken towards disarmament. Only in this way can the safeguarding of world peace be realised step by step.

The ICBD hopes for reason and dialogue. It calls on the Russian Federation and Ukraine to return to the negotiating table so that peace and security can be permanently restored in Europe.

NATO countries also have a duty to de-escalate military conflicts and bear the responsibility - as a military power with destructive potential - to find diplomatic solutions. In the name of the oath of Buchenwald, in the name of the United Nations Charter, of peace and life, we demand:

END THE WAR IN UKRAINE!
