Commenting in Berlin on the 10-year existence of the AfD as a far right extremist party in Germany, Christoph Heubner, Executive Vice President of the International Auschwitz Committee stressed:

“With every year of its existence, the AfD has become increasingly cynical and extreme. As a result, it has contributed to a huge level of radicalisation in language and in the extreme far right as a whole in Germany. The defamation and contempt for political opponents as well as for the remembrance culture that has developed in Germany, are key elements at the core of the party. They feed and motivate the aggressive attitude of the entire anti-democratic spectrum in Germany. MPs and representatives of the AfD repeatedly trigger disconcerting memories in the survivors of the German concentration and extermination camps with their speeches and public performances. These memories go far back in time, to when democracy in Germany was openly attacked and mass hatred and anti-Semitism grew on the streets to become an accepted part of everyday life.”
