The film The Euphoria of Being, with Eva Fahidi, wins the Audience Award in Munich

Euphoria of Being

In the Hungarian film The Euphoria of Being, the Hungarian-Jewish Auschwitz survivor Eva Fahidi meets her alter ego, the young dancer Emese Cuhorka. During the deeply moving process of increasing closeness, dialogue, combined movements and dance, the 94-year-old Eva Fahidi portrays her memories of her murdered family members and the horrific experiences in Auschwitz and the Münchmühle forced labour camp near Allendorf in Hesse. In a very literal sense, it is a moving process of memories that touches audiences around the world and leaves them almost breathless.

Commenting in Berlin on today’s presentation of the Audience Award at the 2020 Munich Dok.fest, Christoph Heubner, the Executive Vice President of the International Auschwitz Committee, stressed:

"Auschwitz survivors throughout the world are feeling very happy for Eva Fahidi and her colleagues on receiving the Audience Award for The Euphoria of Being at the 2020 Munich Dok.fest. The fact that the audience chose this film for their award is especially important, not only for Eva Fahidi, but also for all Holocaust survivors, especially in these times of anti-Semitic conspiracy theories and racial hatred: They see the award as an encouraging gesture that their calls for remembrance and their commitment to the values of democracy are being recognized.”

And the 94-year-old Auschwitz survivor Eva Fahidi commented:

“The most important thing for me was winning the award in the present-day Federal Republic. And on top of this, it is the Audience Award. This is very encouraging news.”
