The International Auschwitz Committee bids farewell to Roman Herzog with gratitude and respect.

In Berlin Christoph Heubner, Executive Vice President of the IAC said:

‘Roman Herzog was a champion of well-fortified democracy, who repeatedly used insights into history to accentuate the value and the fragility of democracy. In 1996 Roman Herzog proclaimed the day of the liberation of Auschwitz to be the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of National Socialism. In doing so, he created a foundation for the personal sympathy and involvement of many young people, for their remembrance of the crimes of National Socialism and their grieving for the sufferings of the victims. The survivors of Auschwitz bid farewell to Roman Herzog, a wise friend and a great representative of democracy.’
