Holocaust survivors around the globe are now honouring the memory of the German theologian and resistance fighter Dietrich Bonhoeffer who was murdered at Floßenbürg concentration camp on 9 April 1945, two weeks before it was liberated. Adolf Hitler gave the explicit order himself.
During a visit to the Auschwitz Memorial, Christoph Heubner, Executive Vice President of the International Auschwitz Committee said:
“Holocaust survivors remember Dietrich Bonhoeffer with affection and respect. His courage and clarity in resisting Hitler and his henchmen mean as much to them as the compassion and solidarity he openly showed to Jewish families from the very beginning of their marginalization and persecution. The strength and hope that sustained Dietrich Bonhoeffer in his resistance shine out to this day against the ignorance and darkness of the new extreme right-wing hatred and anti-Semitism.”
