After the desecration of graves at a Jewish cemetery in Alsace, Christoph Heubner, Executive Vice President of the International Auschwitz Committee stated:

"The Holocaust survivors in many countries around the world are outraged and horrified by the anti-Semitic violation of Jewish graves in Alsace. The aggression and hatred harboured by the perpetrators of such acts is felt as an immediate threat to all Jewish life in Europe transcending all borders.

The survivors fear for the safety and survival of their families in Europe. In view of these repeated eruptions of hatred and the deliberate targeting of cemeteries, they are no longer certain that their grandchildren will have a future home in Europe.

For this reason in particular, Holocaust survivors are expecting a signal from all of Europe’s heads of state in the year of remembrance 2020, and especially at the remembrance ceremony marking the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz concentration and extermination camp on 27 January 2020, this place of crimes against humanity.

Survivors of the Holocaust are asking for presence of their heads of state in Auschwitz on 27 January as a signal of solidarity and encouragement, that a life after Auschwitz is possible for them and their descendants in Europe."
