With deepest sorrow and gratitude the International Auschwitz Committee bids farewell to Max Mannheimer – the impressive witness of his times and the crimes of Auschwitz.

Max Mannheimer was a great democrat who, as a German Jew, was always prepared to stand up and defend democracy in Germany.

During a stay at the Auschwitz Memorial Christoph Heubner, Vice President of the International Auschwitz Committee, stressed:

“Max Mannheimer was a survivor of the horrors who loved people, despite all of the bitter experience. And even in the face of rising fears due to right-wing populist developments in Germany and Europe, he trusted in the power of democracy and the empathy of democrats. In his life after Auschwitz he especially sought dialogue with young people. He helped to shape many of these young people in their decision to stand up for democracy, against anti-Semitism and against hatred.”
