Today’s invitation of the Hungarian President to the CSU parliamentary group meeting spotlights a macabre political companionship and is incomprehensible to Auschwitz survivors in Hungary.

During a stay at Auschwitz Christoph Heubner, the Executive Vice President of the International Auschwitz Committee stressed:

"Victor Orban has taken Hungarian society to the far right. Within his entourage there are staunch anti-Semitic groups marching around displaying their nationalistic contempt for Europe and intimidating the Hungarian Roma. Orban is responsible for historical revisionism and the rehabilitation of anti-Semitic politicians who were accessories to the deportation of the Hungarian Jews to Auschwitz.

For a long time now, and in view of their own experiences during the Holocaust, the Auschwitz survivors in Hungary have found Orban’s attitude and his policies extremely disturbing and inacceptable for Europe. The fact that the red carpet is being rolled out for him in Bavaria and that the CSU, along with their Bavarian Minister-President Seehofer, are seeking his advice and help is a preposterous and scandalous signal."
