People are grieving around the globe following the death of the Auschwitz survivor and Nobel Peace Prize Laurate Elie Wiesel. The International Auschwitz Committee proposes naming a street or square after him in the German capital, Berlin.
Commenting on the proposal Cristoph Heubner, the Executive Vice President of the International Auschwitz Committee, said in Berlin:
"The murderous decisions that were made in Berlin under the Nazis destroyed Elie Wiesel’s family, and they profoundly marked and damaged him, the survivor, throughout his life. He gave a personal account of this in a moving speech to the German Bundestag in Berlin in the year 2000. Nevertheless, he placed his hope in German democracy and above all in the young people in Germany: time and again Elie Wiesel spoke out against hatred. Consequently, it would send out a special signal if a street or a square in Berlin bore his name and perpetuated his central message to continuously ‘combat, track down and disarm’ hatred."
