Today, Holocaust survivors around the globe are marking the European Holocaust Memorial Day in remembrance of the persecution and murder of Sinti and Roma in the German concentration and extermination camps. In Berlin Christoph Heubner, the Executive Vice President of the International Auschwitz Committee paid tribute as follows:
"Survivors of the German concentration and extermination camps are today filled with sadness and profound respect as they remember all of the Sinti and Roma families who suffered together with them in the Nazi camps and were murdered there. They are remembering the courage and the resistance which Sinti and Roma displayed, not only in Auschwitz, and which conveyed strength and hope to all of the prisoners in their pain and despair. The contempt and hatred that Sinti and Roma continue to face to this day in many European countries, is a disgrace for Europe and an open wound that still echoes Auschwitz."
