In Berlin, Christoph Heubner, Executive Vice President of the International Auschwitz Committee, paid tribute to Wolfgang Schäuble as follows:

"Wolfgang Schäuble’s democratic presence and his strong stand on remembering the crimes of the National Socialists were just as distinctive as his anger at the widespread eruptions of anti-Semitism which he immediately spotted and named, with all the strength of his democratic convictions, as a threat to democracy in Germany. He stood up for the preservation of the Auschwitz Memorial, and his personal compassion for the lives of the survivors of Auschwitz and their wellbeing in old age went far beyond any political obligation. We will remember his great commitment. The International Auschwitz Committee bids farewell to a German democrat and a German patriot with sadness, affection and gratitude."
